Why Roman Last Names Existed, What They Were Named After and How They Developed

Roman last names are very interesting because they originate from the ancient Roman culture. The most common type of last name is a patronymic, which comes from the Latin word for father. So if you had the first name Marcus and your father’s name was also Marcus, then your full name would be Marcus Marci filius meaning “Marcus son of Marcus.” Other types of roman last names include: cognomen (usually an adjective), nomen (a noun or place) and agnomen (an additional surname).

Keywords to include: roman last names, patronymic, agnomen

That was from the long-form content. Now for a bulleted list of why Roman last names existed:

*They come from ancient Roman culture and were used by many different types of people in Rome such as citizens, freedmen (ex slaves), soldiers or even foreigners living within its borders.

*The most common type is called patronymic which comes from Latin word meaning father’s name. So if you had first name Marcus your full name would be Marcus Marci filius which means “Marcus son of Marcus.” Other types include cognomonal surname (usually an adjective) nomen gentile (a noun or place) and A non-traditional surname can be a daunting task for any family, but it is even more difficult when you have small children!

*Roman last names are not the same

*Before they were adopted by families in Rome it was common for slaves to have only one word while free people would be assigned up to three words that show who their father and mother was.
